      <image:caption>Tobias Keene, D.D.S. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Tobias Keene brings a bit of unabashed Southern hospitality to all his patients. He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries. When not striving to keep his patients happy and healthy, he’s enjoys hiking with his family in Rock Creek Park.</image:caption>

He aims to research on the complex interactions between development and environment, and seek means of achieving sustainability. Currently, he is studying the effects of iron limitation on the uptake of nitrogen in Symbiodiniaceae and its impact on the coral-algal symbiont relationship. Outside research, JJ enjoys his free time watching sci-fi anime, tv-series and/or movies.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Insights into role of metalloproteins in resilience of corals against bleaching The Balik-PhD project aims to elucidate the roles and importance of intracellular trace metal availability in symbiotic dinoflagellates and their influence on the growth of the coral holobiont. This project is envisioned to contribute to the advancement of basic knowledge about coral reef health as well as aid in policy making in relation to utilization of coral reef ecosystems for fisheries activities. With this, the project will also provide opportunities for education and training of the next generation of scientists and researchers by promoting studies in the field of inorganic biogeochemistry.</image:caption>
